China has a long and profound history of woodcarving in a variety of types. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, with the rise of citizen stratum, woodcarving has gradually become an essential decorative element in the architecture, furniture and interior furnishings of ordinary people’s homes. Because of this fashion, many local woodcarving schools formed, and Suzhou mahogany carving is one of them. Suzhou, which has been the communication and transportation artery, has special advantages of sea and land products, outstanding handicraftsmen and prosperous commerce. Fine Southeast Asian mahogany used as materials, designed by local literati, and produced by Xiangshan School craftsmen, the art of mahogany carving in Suzhou started to develop, characterised by the use of exquisite materials, delicate carvings, and elegant themes.
Suzhou mahogany carving has been a favourite of the world since its inception, and Ms Shi Dongmei is a great lover of it. She grew up in Shanqian Village at the foot of Lingyan Hill in Suzhou, where her father was a carpenter of the Xiangshan School, an architect group enjoying a long history, so all kinds of architectural carvings were readily available in his hands. Her mother often took her to Lingyan Temple to do volunteer work, which allowed her to see the treasures of woodcarving in the temple at a young age. Her love for woodcarving has long been embedded in her heart.
Staying true to her passion, Shi started to create her own works. For her, woodcarving is the art of subtraction. Not only the redundancy of wood should be subtracted, the artisan should also abandon chasing fame and fortune. The only way to create a masterpiece of woodcarving is to create it with a pure mind. Therefore, she started from scratch by hiring craftsmen, selecting the best materials, and creating her artwork based on her own principles. Striving for perfection, she will dismantle furniture if it doesn’t meet expectations, and discard works if there is a mistake in the pattern. Under these stringent requirements, her masterpieces appear one after another. The proportions of the furniture are harmonious, the lines are smooth, and the ornaments are made with ingenious conception and dexterous skills. There is even a large-scale mahogany carving named “Suzhou’s Golden Age” with a wide range of details, which won “Shanhua Award”, the highest prize for Chinese folk arts.
The painting “Suzhou’s Golden Age” was originally a masterpiece of Xu Yang, a painter in the Qing Dynasty. With the nostalgia for his hometown, the scenery and people of Suzhou’s prosperity were encapsulated in the painting, and because of the same feeling, Shi was determined to recreate Suzhou’s golden age in the form of woodcarving. The mahogany carving “Suzhou's Golden Age” took eleven years to complete, and once it was released, it moved the world. The rigour of its pattern, the magnificent layout of its scenery, and the vividness of its characters, not only perfectly interpreted the original work, but also fully demonstrated the incomparable aesthetic value of hand-carving. It perpetuates the cultural genes of the traditional woodcarvings in Suzhou.
